A whale shark learning center has officially opened in Labuan Jambu Village, Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara, on February 3, 2025. The center, which serves as a literacy center was built in the middle of Taman Pantai Panjang Hiu Paus in Tarano District. Konservasi Indonesia, supported by the French Embassy and the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government, built the learning center with the aim of providing information to the public about the ecological role of whale sharks.

“With this learning center, we hope to increase the understanding of the local community and tourists about the importance of whale sharks in coastal and marine ecosystems and the community’s economy. Visitors to this learning center can learn about the threats facing the world’s largest fish species, and how to protect them,” said Senior Vice President and Executive Chair of Konservasi Indonesia, Meizani Irmadhiany.

Information on whale shark behavior, habitat, and the latest scientific research results are presented in this place, Meizani added. “By reading the guidelines and the latest research results on whale sharks in this learning center, we hope that people will take part in strengthening responsible and sustainable ecotourism. We want tourists’ experience getting acquainted with whale sharks in Saleh Bay to continue to maintain and properly manage their natural habitat,” she said.
