Dr. Andhani Widya Hartanti, a veterinarian with the Frankfurt Zoological Society-Indonesia, was honored with the KfW-Bernhard-Grzimek Award 2024 for her dedication to conserving Sumatran orangutans. For the past nine years, she has led efforts to rehabilitate and reintroduce orphaned orangutans in the Bukit Tigapuluh landscape. Under her care, more than 200 orangutans have been returned to the wild. Beyond saving individual animals, her work also safeguards the Sumatran rainforest, a crucial ecosystem and carbon reservoir. Dr. Andhani’s efforts are essential for orangutan survival, biodiversity conservation, and the global fight against climate change.
