Harnessing the Potential of Trees on Farms for Meeting National and Global Biodiversity Targets

Trees on Farms (TonF)

Tree stocks on agricultural land perform a key function in terms of interconnecting ecosystems and maintaining soil and agrobiodiversity. However, the significance of these ‘trees on farms’ (TonF) has not been adequately incorporated into partner country NBSAPs . The project uses participatory approaches to improve knowledge of TonF. By integrating indigenous and local knowledge, the project provides relevant stakeholders with context-specific, tree-based measures that can contribute to biodiversity conservation, the avoidance of emissions and adaptation to climate change impacts. The project is also supporting the integration of sustainable management and agricultural biodiversity into the fields of policy and planning. Partner organisations are also mobilising sources of funding and developing innovation platforms. Networks are being leveraged to deliver instruments and further training, so as to evaluate biodiversity functions according to national requirements.
