Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition

In Indonesia, the project supports the stakeholders in East Kalimantan and South Sumatra to transition away from coal fairly and ensures inclusive long-term economic development. The focus of the Indonesian Component is to achieve the following results:
– Informed social dialogue and stakeholder engagement on just energy transition in coal regions
– Policy advice to improve the policy framework for just energy transition, including gender aspects, is fed into respective policy processes.
– Transformational measures to support the JET in the coal regions are rolled out.

Policy Priorities :

In Indonesia, IKI JET advises two coal regions (East Kalimantan and South Sumatra) on policies covering the following topics (a) green economy transformation, (b) active labour market policy and skill development, (c) social protection in the context of coal transition The recommendations are and will be discussed in the (Pre) Regional Consultation Forum consisting of representatives of groups potentially affected by the coal transition process.

Policy Targets :

The key elements of the JET policy areas will be integrated into the draft local development/government plans by the planning agencies of the focus regions on 2 occasions. Up to December 2023, the project has provided input to the provincial long-term development plan (RPJPD) draft for South Sumatra and East Kalimantan. Some key elements of the three policy areas have been incorporated into the draft RPJPD of the two provinces.

Policy Program/Initiative :
 
– In 2023, the project supported technical assistance to the long-term development planning process (RPJPD) in South Sumatra and East Kalimantan Province. During 2024-2025, the project will give input for Indonesia’s medium development plan (RPJMD) and local energy plan (RUED) related to JET elements.
– L52By the end of 2023, the project has rolled out the assessment of potential alternative economic activities to support the development of the regional economic transformation plan for two provinces. The result of the assessment will be discussed in the (pre) Regional Consultation Forum to gain input and buy-in from key stakeholders.
