On December 18–19, 2024, Urban Act Indonesia successfully conducted a two-day training on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) mainstreaming in the public transportation sector. The initiative aimed to strengthen the capacity of Padang city government officials in integrating GEDSI principles into transportation planning, policymaking, implementation and evaluation. By fostering inclusivity, safety, and equity, the training sought to promote transformative approaches in urban mobility development.
The first day focused on national and local policy frameworks. The Mayor of Padang opened the session, reinforcing the city’s commitment to equitable public transportation. Expert speakers from National Line Ministries and Padang’s Department of Transportation provided insights into identifying and formulating GEDSI-focused policies. Interactive exercises enabled participants to analyse existing policies and draft strategies for more inclusive mobility solutions for Padang
On the second day, the focus shifted to user perspectives. Representatives from women’s groups, disability organizations, and youth communities shared experiences and challenges related to public transportation access. Through group discussions, participants brainstormed, deep dive, identified key issues and proposed infrastructure and service improvements to address GEDSI concerns.
The training concluded with concrete recommendations for incorporating GEDSI principles into future transportation initiatives, highlighting Padang’s planning and dedication to accessible and inclusive urban mobility.
