Western Pacific Sustainable Peatland Management

SAGU

Degradation and loss of peatlands on the large islands of Borneo and New Guinea continue to be a significant threat to sustainable development. The project aims to halt or limit the degradation and loss of these peatlands by addressing the underlying causes. By improving data on upland and lowland peatlands the project aims to strengthen policy, planning and monitoring for the conservation, protection and restoration of these peatlands. Conservation education, outreach and training will also be expanded through improved institutional structures and processes. It will also enable local people to participate in management measures to protect intact peatlands and restore degraded peatlands. The intended impact is that governments have incorporated sustainable management of peatlands and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
